A Magical Rose Castle Estate Wedding in Cumbria

When Abi and Elliot first got in touch about their wedding at Rose Castle Estate, I think I replied faster than I have ever replied to an enquiry. Anyone who knows me knows I have a slight obsession with historic buildings, so the chance to photograph a Rose Castle Estate wedding was an immediate yes from me.

Rose Castle is one of those venues that seems to surprise you at every turn. Dating back hundreds of years and once home to monks, it is packed with history, character and incredible views. Every window frames a different part of the Cumbrian countryside, and on Abi and Elliot’s wedding day the sunshine made the whole place glow. It genuinely felt like the perfect summer wedding setting.

A Historic Chapel and Endless Portrait Opportunities

Both Abi and Elliot got ready on site before making their way to the chapel tucked within the castle walls. One of the things I love about Rose Castle Estate is that the chapel is deconsecrated, meaning couples can have a legal ceremony there regardless of religion. The soaring ceilings, beautiful architecture and incredible natural light made it an absolute dream to photograph.

After the ceremony we explored the grounds together, and honestly, there were moments when it felt more like wandering around an Italian villa or a French château than being in the North of England. Every corner seemed to offer another beautiful backdrop, and I found myself constantly spotting new places for portraits. One of my favourite things about photographing at new venues is how inspired and creative it makes me feel.

Personal Touches and a Proper Good Party

The couple filled their day with thoughtful touches that reflected their personalities perfectly. Guests were treated to a “Sip and Solve” crossword filled with clues about the couple, which kept everyone entertained during drinks reception. They also organised a first dance sweepstake, with guests placing bets on what song they thought the couple would choose. The winner even walked away with a £20 prize.

It was such a fun and relaxed atmosphere from start to finish, surrounded by wonderful family and friends. Weddings like this are exactly why I love travelling for work. While I’m based in Yorkshire, I am always happy to travel for incredible venues and lovely couples, and Rose Castle Estate is certainly a venue I would love to return to again.

If you’re planning a Rose Castle Estate wedding and looking for a Cumbria wedding photographer who loves historic venues, beautiful light and natural storytelling, I’d love to hear from you.
